Foie Gras - pan seared, served with PX sherry glaze, perilla leaf and Japanese rice
Alittle Tashi is the newest kid calling the funky Jalan Besar neighbourhood home – a refreshingly unique little pocket of Singapore where hipster spirit is flourishing. Let loose, eat with your hands and get messy. In a city full of rules, this kinda teeny space only has one – have fun. This place is like a little black dress. Simple in the front, party at the back. The entrance is so non-descript its easily missed if you aren’t looking hard enough. But once inside its swish casual, with ropes dangling from the ceiling and large lanterns hanging from the air, creating a sense of intimacy.

Head to the back and into what they call ‘The Laundry Room’. A chic hangout area for those who just want a drink or small bites. In keeping with the rest of the neighbourhood where laundry hangs from windows, you’ll find Tashi’s playful take on community with their own laundry hanging in the form of neon lights.

A night here isn’t cheap but its good. The fare is a mix-match of Asian fusion with comfort food concepts. Our top picks on the menu are the Foie Gras (pan-seared with Japanese rice, rice crackers, perilla leaf and PX sherry glaze), the Lion’s Head (Shanghai-style braise giant port meatballs), the Hot Salty Soya Milk (trust us, its good; think chinese donuts, pickled radish, Szechuan chili oil) and the Blood Cockles (Vietnam style saute, chili jam, fish sauce caramel and crispy pork fat).

One more special thing about this place is their sauces. They have a range of sauces that somehow work with every dish. Our favorite was the Miso Cream.

Tashi is a classy, elegant hideaway for happy hour after work that’s not too far from the CBD. A low-key date night that’s still impressive. Its starting out small and quaint but don’t be surprised it becomes the next best secret in town.
